I was watching a movie the other day, where a hacker hacked some big time computer. The people, who were hacked, were able to trace it back to the hacker in some super graphical way. The sad part is, in the real world in order to have the ability to track someone you need a better firewall.
When AT&T or Comcast come out and install a router at your office, you would assume it’s a good firewall. They are decent at blocking traffic, however they are EXTREMELY basic. The same thing goes for the $100 dollar routers out there.
They do not log– which means if someone were to hack your system, it would be next to impossible to track.
They do not examine traffic– those routers are just not good at telling the good traffic from bad.
Advanced blocking- there is no ability to block certain items from coming in and out of the network.
So why in the world am I telling you this? We are only as good as the technology you have. So if you do not have an advanced firewall, we would not have the ability to track an intruder. The main reason I am throwing this out there is because I do not want our clients to be under any illusions regarding the capabilities of your hardware.
Now this may not be important to everyone, but if it is below are some great options.
Watchguard Firebox- $1,500- $2,000 – My personal FAV!
Cisco ASA – $350 – $1,500
