Stats on 365 Comprises
Email security has been around for years; it provides basic protection by blocking spam, viruses, and various other malicious emails. Given that most of us utilize Microsoft 365 for email, it’s easy to confuse traditional email security with cloud security for 365. Many people assume that because they pay for email security, their Office 365 is also secure. This is an extremely dangerous assumption. However, the confusion is understandable given the numerous types of security services available for various products. It’s hard for them not to all blend together.
You might be thinking, “Why do I need to pay for two different types of email protection?” Let’s use an analogy to explain this without the technical jargon.
There is more than just one way to compromise email.
“It’s easy to confuse traditional email security with cloud security for 365.”

The Nightclub Analogy:
Standard Email Security:
In this scenario, Office 365/servers are a nightclub. Picture a long line, like at Studio 54 (probably dating myself here). Each patron standing in this long line to get in the front door is an email. The big, scary bouncer standing at the entrance, lifting the rope and letting people in or tossing them out of line, is equivalent to the standard email security that has been around for years. This type of email protection is what most organizations have and commonly confuse with 365 cloud security.
Cloud Security for 365 and Other Cloud Applications:
Now, while you still have that popular nightclub in your head, imagine the back of the building. It’s a dark alley with an employee entrance. Think of the employee entrance as the way you get your email on all your different devices—that’s the door your phone, PC, or laptop uses to access your email. Ideally, only employees would use that door. However, in today’s world, hackers, bots, and viruses are constantly trying to access that door.
They try different keys in the lock, or they might see if kicking the door enough times or having enough people run into it will open it. If they manage to get into the club, they wreak absolute havoc, sometimes without you even knowing. They might hide in a janitor’s closet and listen to your conversations to find something they could exploit for financial gain or just to be malicious. Think of conversations you’ve had via email. Have you ever discussed payment to a vendor with your CFO or accountant, or talked about where you bank? Once inside the club, they could poison the drinks, and since all the club goers trust you as the owner, they all drink up, only to face devastating consequences.
“Cloud security for 365 monitors everything happening inside your email, from rules and logins.”
The Importance of Cloud Security:
Cloud security for 365 is like placing sensors, alarms, and cameras around the entire nightclub with a direct line to the police, not just a bouncer at the front door! Now, if someone is constantly trying a different key in a lock, a siren immediately goes off and sends an alert to your alarm company (in this analogy, that’s Fuse). Fuse will immediately prevent that individual from trying to gain access.
Cloud security for 365 monitors everything happening inside your email, from rules and logins to every single aspect of your 365, looking for malicious attempts or behavior. For example, if a bot is trying to log in to your 365 from China repeatedly, a flag will go up.
In summary, while you may think your email is safe with just email security, it isn’t. Email security only inspects incoming emails, not the activity inside your 365 or attempts to gain access to your 365.
